Set high on Mt Pleasant, this home is designed to capture panoramic views while providing privacy and shelter from the elements. A strong, simple form, natural materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow define the design. The cantilevered upper level extends towards the view, while the lower level opens to a sheltered garden, balancing exposure with retreat.

WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

With an elevated, exposed site, the design needed to embrace the expansive coastal and city views while managing wind and privacy. A large upper deck extends the living space outward, creating a direct connection to the landscape. The lower level is set into the terrain, providing a more sheltered outdoor area for relaxed, year-round use.

DESIGN DRIVERS

Materiality was key to achieving a balance of warmth, durability, and texture. A plastered base grounds the home, while cedar cladding softens the exterior and adds a natural warmth. The strong horizontal roofline extends outward, enhancing shade and shelter, while glass balustrades and full-height glazing ensure uninterrupted views. Internally, a restrained palette of timber, plaster, and black accents reinforces the home’s clean, cohesive aesthetic.

LIFE INSIDE
Designed for easy, comfortable living, the home balances openness with defined spaces. The main living areas occupy the upper floor, positioned to take full advantage of the views, with seamless flow onto the deck. A floating timber staircase, enclosed in glass, connects the levels while allowing natural light to filter through. Below, secondary living areas open onto a sheltered garden, creating a more private retreat within the landscape.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
Creating a sense of openness while maintaining privacy was a key focus. Large windows capture the views, while careful positioning ensures the home remains a retreat from the street. The layout provides a balance of social and private spaces, making the home feel connected yet intimate. Passive solar design and natural ventilation contribute to year-round comfort, ensuring the home is as functional as it is striking.
